Powering AI Commerce: Google Unveils Agent Payments Protocol (AP2)

A universal standard for secure, agent-led transactions across cards, crypto, and real-time transfers

Why a new protocol?

AI agents are now capable of shopping and paying on behalf of users. This breaks the traditional assumption that a human always clicks “buy” and raises questions of authorization, authenticity, and accountability.

How AP2 works

At its core are Mandates—cryptographically signed digital contracts that provide verifiable proof of user intent:

  • Real-time shopping with Intent Mandates and Cart Mandates.
  • Delegated tasks, like buying concert tickets at launch, with pre-authorized rules.

This creates a non-repudiable audit trail from intent to payment.

Unlocking new commerce

AP2 enables smarter shopping, personalized offers, and coordinated tasks like booking flights and hotels under a single budget.

Crypto-ready

With the A2A x402 extension, developed alongside Coinbase, Ethereum Foundation, and MetaMask, AP2 integrates stablecoins and crypto payments securely into the ecosystem.

What’s next

Google calls on networks, issuers, merchants, and tech providers to join the effort. The open GitHub repository will host specs, documentation, and reference implementations.
